WHAT IS TAUGHT AT THE ACADEMY?
The program is designed to support young people in foster care to access - and flourish in - higher education. As such we support young people academically throughout high school. Academically, the emphasis of the summer academies is to prepare students for the upcoming school year by developing fundamental skill sets required in that year. While creating a sense of community with a cohort of 30 raising 8th and 9th graders.
In addition to the academic programming we will teach important life skills such as cooking and nutrition, self-soothing, anger management and emotional regulation, financial literacy, education and other rights and self-advocacy.
The Academy will work with attorneys and social workers to ensure youth are in appropriate foster homes, and engage caregivers to equip them with the resources and supports needed to keep youth in their homes. In addition, by working with local partners, the academy identifies and trains adult mentors who provide additional ongoing support to the youth as they transition into higher education. The goal of these efforts is to ensure that the youth transition into adulthood with a team of adults who provide ongoing support.
The First Star Academies achieve their objectives by providing specialized programming that addresses: (1) academics; (2) life skills; and (3) caregiver engagement.
The First Star University of Utah Academy is a free, comprehensive four-year college access program for youth in foster care. The Academy offers a 4 week residential summer academy where youth receive academic support, enrichment, and encouragement needed to assist them in becoming competitive college applicants. The program engages a cohort of 30 students in a variety of fun and active learning opportunities that include academic courses for college credit, independent studies, social and cultural activities, field trips, service learning and recreational activities. In addition to the summer immersion program, students and their families will receive individual support throughout the academic year through monthly Saturday Academies, education advocacy, and caregiver workshops.
